Pride & community
Also known as Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk
A community-led Pride procession celebrating LGBTQIA+ visibility, solidarity and equality through Kolkata's streets.
The Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk is a public LGBTQIA+ Pride procession held in Kolkata, bringing community members and allies together on city streets. Participants carry rainbow and community flags, banners and placards while walking along a designated route.
The walk is both a community gathering and a public expression of visibility, dignity, solidarity and equality. The route, scale and supporting activities can vary from one edition to another.
Visibility — The walk gives LGBTQIA+ people a visible presence in public space and creates opportunities for people to express identity openly and collectively.
Equality and dignity — Pride participants use the gathering to affirm equal treatment and challenge discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
Solidarity — The event also brings together friends, families and allies, connecting LGBTQIA+ concerns with broader ideas of human rights, inclusion and social justice.
The tradition began with the Friendship Walk, a small early gathering of around fifteen participants. The walk was conceived as a public expression of solidarity and also involved visiting organisations and groups connected with human rights and HIV and AIDS work.
Over time, the event developed into the Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk, growing from a small activist gathering into a large public procession involving LGBTQIA+ participants, friends, families and allies. Its routes and organising groups have changed over time, while public visibility and community solidarity have remained central themes.
