Hyderabad Tyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival

Also known as Hyderabad Tyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival

A Hyderabad celebration of Tyagaraja's compositions and the living tradition of Carnatic music.

Overview

The Hyderabad Tyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival is an annual Carnatic music festival in Hyderabad dedicated to the compositions and musical legacy of saint-composer Tyagaraja. It is organised by the Sanskriti Foundation and is inspired by the traditional Aradhana held at Tiruvaiyaru in Tamil Nadu.

The programme brings together senior performers, emerging musicians, students, teachers and listeners through vocal and instrumental concerts, community performances and collective singing.

Important dates

  • January–February — The festival is generally held during the period associated with Tyagaraja Aradhana.
  • Pushya Bahula Panchami — The lunar observance associated with Tyagaraja's Aradhana and the principal collective rendition of his Pancharatna Kritis.

Why is it celebrated?

Musical remembrance — The festival honours Tyagaraja, whose compositions form a central part of the Carnatic repertoire.

Devotion through music — Many of Tyagaraja's kritis express devotion, especially to Rama, and connect musical practice with spiritual reflection.

Passing on tradition — Performances by students, teachers and established artists help sustain the guru–shishya tradition and introduce younger generations to the repertoire.

History

The Hyderabad festival was established in the mid-2010s by the Sanskriti Foundation, with the aim of bringing the spirit of the Tyagaraja Aradhana tradition to Hyderabad. It was inspired by the major Aradhana at Tiruvaiyaru, where musicians gather to commemorate Tyagaraja through collective performance.

Over time, the Hyderabad programme expanded from its early format into a multi-day festival featuring evening concerts, student–teacher performances, Nagara Sankeerthana, honours for senior musicians and large-scale Pancharatna Seva.
