Also known as Hyderabad Queer Swabhimana Yatra

A Hyderabad pride march bringing queer communities and allies together for visibility, solidarity and celebration.

Overview

Hyderabad Queer Pride is a public LGBTQIA+ pride march and cultural gathering held in Hyderabad, Telangana. It brings queer and transgender communities together with allies, families and supporters in a visible expression of community and solidarity.

The event takes place in public spaces and commonly combines a street march with speeches, placards, music and cultural performances. Its form and route can change between editions.

Important dates

  • February — The pride march is usually held on a Sunday in February, although the exact date can vary.
  • Event day — The march and related public programmes generally take place on the same day.

Why is it celebrated?

Visibility — Pride creates a public space where LGBTQIA+ people can express identity and community openly.

Equality and dignity — Marches provide a platform for discussing discrimination, safety, access and equal participation in society.

Community and solidarity — The gathering connects queer people with allies, families and wider civil society.

History

Hyderabad's first queer pride march emerged from organising by local LGBTQ support groups, community members and allies. The event later adopted the name Hyderabad Queer Swabhimana Pride and then Hyderabad Queer Swabhimana Yatra, with swabhimana referring to self-respect.

Over time, the yatra has changed its routes, themes and forms of participation. Its schedule has also varied, including a temporary interruption during the COVID-19 pandemic and a later return to public marching.
