Pride & community
Also known as Gujarat LGBTQ Pride
Pride marches across Gujarat bring LGBTQIA+ communities and allies together for visibility, solidarity and equality.
Gujarat LGBT Pride is a collective term for Pride marches and community events held in cities across Gujarat. These gatherings provide public spaces for LGBTQIA+ people, families, friends and allies to express identity, solidarity and belonging.
Marches are accompanied by community activities such as cultural performances, discussions, art, information stalls and social gatherings. Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Gandhinagar have all hosted Pride-related events.
There is no single statewide Pride date. Timing varies between cities and organisers, with marches and related events taking place at different points of the year.
Visibility — Pride creates a public space where LGBTQIA+ people can be visible on their own terms and connect with others in the community.
Equality and rights — Marches provide a platform for discussion and advocacy concerning equal treatment, dignity and freedom from discrimination.
Community and solidarity — Friends, families, organisations and allies can participate alongside queer communities and show support.
Gujarat's organised Pride movement includes a first statewide Pride march in Surat in 2013. Subsequent marches and community events developed in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, with Gandhinagar also becoming a venue for Pride activities.
Ahmedabad's Pride movement has included marches, queer conferences, community fairs, panel discussions and cultural programmes. The events have evolved into varied forms of public gathering rather than a single fixed festival format.
