Goa Arts and Literature Festival

A homegrown Goa festival bringing writers, artists, readers and ideas together through talks, readings and book launches

Overview

The Goa Arts and Literature Festival (GALF) is a recurring cultural festival that brings literature, visual arts and public conversation together in Goa. It provides a meeting place for writers, poets, translators, artists, publishers and readers, with programmes that often include both established and emerging voices.

The festival has a particular connection with Goa's multilingual and cross-cultural literary life while also welcoming participants and subjects from across India and beyond. Sessions are held in a public cultural setting and are complemented by book launches, readings, performances and programmes for younger audiences.

Important dates

  • Opening day — the festival begins with inaugural addresses, presentations or the unveiling of festival artwork.
  • Festival days — panels, book discussions, readings, launches and cultural programmes take place throughout the main programme.
  • Closing day — the programme concludes with final discussions, readings, launches or performances.

Why is it celebrated?

Many ways of belonging — GALF creates space for writers and artists whose experiences, regions, languages or genres may receive less attention in mainstream cultural forums.

Literary exchange — The festival encourages conversations across Indian languages, translation traditions and international literary cultures.

Goan cultural expression — It provides a platform for literature and creative work connected with Goa while placing local voices in dialogue with wider cultural conversations.

History

The festival emerged from a collaboration between the International Centre Goa and the Goa Writers group, developing as a homegrown, independent and volunteer-driven literary gathering. Its early programme established an interest in Goan writing alongside voices from other parts of India and the wider world.

Over time, GALF has expanded its programme to include translation, poetry, visual art, music, performance, children's activities and discussions on subjects ranging from literature and history to society, ecology and food. Its programming continues to combine local cultural perspectives with national and international participation.
