Bhubaneswar Pride Parade

A city Pride gathering celebrating LGBTQ+ visibility, community, equality, and inclusion in Odisha.

Overview

Bhubaneswar Pride Parade is a public Pride gathering in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. It brings LGBTQ+ people and allies together for a street march and related community activities.

The parade has combined public visibility with messages about equality, social acceptance, dignity, and inclusion. Activities and organising groups can vary between editions.

Important dates

  • June–July — Pride activities in Bhubaneswar have often taken place during these months, although the date is not fixed.
  • September — Some editions have also been held later in the year.

Why is it celebrated?

Visibility — Pride creates a public space where LGBTQ+ people can express identity and community openly.

Equality and dignity — Marchers and organisers use the event to call for equal treatment, social acceptance, and freedom from discrimination.

Community — The parade connects queer communities, allies, students, professionals, and civil-society groups across Odisha.

History

2009 — Bhubaneswar held its first Pride parade on 27 June. The event was organised by Sakha, the Institute for Development Programmes and Research, and SAATHII, and included speeches, documentary screening, street theatre, a public meeting, and a candlelight vigil.

2010–2018 — A second Rainbow Pride walk took place on 3 July 2010. Another major Pride parade followed on 1 September 2018, organised with the participation of SAATHII, Sakha, and the Parichay Collective. More recent city and state-level Pride walks have continued to bring together LGBTQ+ participants and allies.
