A Hindu pilgrimage gathering at Tribeni Sangam in West Bengal, centered on sacred bathing and spiritual observances.
Bansberia Kumbh Mela is a Hindu religious gathering held at Tribeni, within the Bansberia municipality of Hooghly district in West Bengal. The festival takes place around the sacred riverfront and ghats of the Tribeni Sangam.
The gathering is centered on pilgrimage, ritual bathing, worship, religious discourses and the meeting of devotees and ascetics. The contemporary festival is also known as Tribeni Kumbho Mahotsav.
Sacred bathing — Bathing at the Tribeni Sangam is regarded by devotees as a spiritually significant act of purification and pilgrimage.
Tribeni Sangam — The meeting of the Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati gives the site its sacred identity and connects the festival with the wider Hindu tradition of pilgrimage to river confluences.
Spiritual gathering — The mela provides a setting for devotees, sadhus and religious teachers to worship, listen to discourses and participate in collective observances.
Tribeni has long been regarded as a sacred place in Bengal and appears in Bengali religious and literary traditions. Historical accounts describe bathing and pilgrimage practices connected with the site, while the town also developed as a centre of learning, culture and trade.
The older Kumbh tradition declined during the medieval period and was later revived in contemporary times after a long interruption. The present-day Tribeni Kumbho Mahotsav began its modern revival in the early 2020s, with local organisations and devotees seeking to restore the pilgrimage tradition and heritage of the site.
